Why Afro Health® Exists

Black health was our
goal from day one.

Afro Health® exists because we believe Black health deserves greater attention.

Not as an afterthought.
Not as an extension of something
created for somebody else.
As the starting point.

Because looking after your health
should help you get more from life.

Evidence-based nutrition.
Expert insight. A greater focus on Black health.

Who products begin with matters

We were not always the starting point.

That was not always deliberate. People naturally create from what they know, the communities around them and the problems they can see.

But historically, Black people have had fewer opportunities, less access to capital and less representation among the founders, investors and decision makers bringing products to market.

And when you are not in the room creating the product, you are less likely to be the person it starts with.

The result could be seen in everyday life.

Plasters made to blend with lighter complexions.

Tights produced around a limited range of complexions.

03

Beauty ranges where darker shades were limited or absent.

“For years, many products simply reflected the people they had originally been created around.”

Things are changing

More categories are rethinking who their products start with.

More Black founders are creating. More businesses are recognising audiences that were previously overlooked.

Beauty provides one of the clearest examples. When Fenty Beauty entered the market with a foundation range that included darker complexions from the beginning, it helped change what customers expected from the category.

It wasn't simply about representation in an advert. It was about who had been considered when the product itself was created.

“Representation changed beauty. Health deserves the same attention.”

Mainstream wellness

Health and wellness still have further to go.

There are already brilliant health and wellness brands creating products used by millions of people.

Like businesses in almost every category, those brands naturally reflect their origins, their audiences and the people they were originally built around.

But look across mainstream wellness and a pattern is easy to see. Black people have rarely been the starting point.

This isn't about saying those products are bad. And it isn't about suggesting Black people cannot use them.

It raises a different question:

It raises a different question:

What happens when black health is the starting point?

Who gets studied matters

Representation goes beyond the advert.

Health is different from beauty. Representation isn't only about whether you can see somebody who looks like you in an advert.

Health advice is built on evidence. And who is represented in that evidence matters. Black people remain underrepresented in important areas of health research.

When research participants do not fully reflect the people the findings will eventually serve, important differences, experiences and health priorities can receive less attention.

That is why representation in health research matters.

Because the health conversation isn't the same for everyone

Some health issues deserve closer attention.

Some health issues affect Black communities differently or disproportionately.

Try Afro Health

Focused on Black health. Open to everyone.

Black health is our starting point. Better health is the goal.

Focusing on Black health does not mean excluding anyone. Afro Health® is available to everyone.

Our focus simply means asking questions that have too often received less attention.

What does the evidence tell us?

Where are people underrepresented?

What health issues matter particularly to Black communities?

How can nutrition and expert insight make looking after your health simpler?

This is about more than what's going wrong

Black health should also be about what we want more of.

Black health should not only be discussed through statistics about illness, deficiencies and disparities.

Good health gives you more life.

Cheers to life.

We want to help build a more positive relationship with health.
